Automated capture and classification of railroad environment

Nextrail and Point Cloud Technology were able to create significant added value for the customer in the rail environment. In the context of the project, Nextrail provides a laser scanner and a camera system mounted on trains to record the track environment during journeys. The data that is captured in the process is merged into a 3D point cloud. This point cloud thus documents all important objects in the railway environment such as railway tracks, overhead lines, axle counters, etc. 

It was particularly important for the customer that these objects were accurately recognized, classified, and documented. The AI technology developed by Point Cloud Technology was used for the evaluation among other methods. Thus, infrastructure requiring maintenance can be determined and be compared with inventory data. As a result, the effort of time-consuming on-site inspections is reduced.
