Practical Functionalities

In large cities, the number of trees can run into the millions. And even in large parks, cemeteries, or company terrain, maintaining road safety is not a task that can be done casually. It is important to be able to prove that inspections and maintenance measures have been carried out, particularly if, for example, damage has been caused by storms and legal disputes could be imminent. Corresponding solutions for the council administration are therefore in high demand.

Together with Widemann Systeme, Point Cloud Technology implemented a project for the city of Cologne to automatically create a city-wide tree cadaster based on remote sensing data (aerial images and 3D point clouds). The tree population was determined using an AI-driven vegetation analysis. This enabled the reliable mapping of otherwise inaccessible areas such as forests, backyards and parks. In addition to the number and locations, many other characteristics of the vegetation such as height, crowns, tree tops and color were recorded in the analysis. The resulting fully accessible tree cadaster enables a continuous workflow for public information.

We use PCT’s 3D point cloud solution to create digital tree cadastres. In this way these can be built efficiently and budget-friendly and are also a very accurate representation of reality. The automated vegetation analysis provides important decision-making information and enables further forecasting. Our end users appreciate the possibility of a complete and qualified solution for the evaluation of their data.
